The Hawaiian Fly Rod

Signature Series – 8wt Fly Rods
By Makani Christensen
Born from Hawaii’s saltwater flats and refined through months of demanding field testing, The Sacred Rods Signature Series brings together three premium 8-weight fly rods—each shaped by the instincts, experience, and fishing style of a legendary Hawaiian angler: Makani Christensen, Elias Espiritu, and Joe Marks
All three are combat veterans, fishing partners, and pioneers who have helped redefine the pursuit of bonefish and other powerful predatory species. Their original fly patterns have proven themselves not only in Hawaii, but in saltwater fisheries around the world.
Every rod in the series is built with the same uncompromising standards of quality, strength, and craftsmanship. Each blank is manufactured by the Tori factory in Japan and selected for its exceptional durability and performance. Premium guides and carefully chosen components complete a platform designed to withstand hard use while delivering the precision serious anglers demand.
The difference between these rods is intentional: each one is tuned to a distinct action and flex profile, allowing you to choose the performance that best matches your casting style.
The Makani Christensen “Oio” Special
The “Oio” Special is the fastest rod in the series—a super-fast-action 8-weight built for maximum line speed, distance, and control.
Its stiff lower section and rapid recovery load quickly and unload with authority, making it the strongest choice for casting into heavy wind, carrying long lengths of line, and turning over large or wind-resistant flies. It produces tight, powerful loops with minimal delay and responds best to an assertive casting stroke. When conditions are difficult and there is no room for hesitation, the “Oio” Special provides the greatest reserve of power and the most direct feel of the three rods.
The Joe Marks 8wt Fly Rod
The Joe Marks 8-weight offers a fast action with more flex than the “Oio” Special, creating the series’ most balanced combination of power, feel, and versatility.
It still loads quickly and casts confidently into the wind, but its slightly deeper flex gives the angler more feedback during the cast and a broader timing window. The rod feels more connected through the middle of the blank, making it easier to adjust between short, controlled presentations and longer power casts. For anglers who want fast-action performance without the highly rigid feel of a super-fast rod, the Joe Marks model is the ideal middle ground.
The Elias Espiritu “Kurupt Hawaiian” 8wt Fly Rod
The Elias Espiritu “Kurupt Hawaiian” 8-weight features the deepest flex and smoothest action in the series: a medium-fast design built for feel, timing, and control.
The blank loads farther down the rod, allowing anglers to feel the rod build power throughout the casting stroke. This deeper load rewards a deliberate, connected rhythm and provides greater sensitivity for short casts, delicate presentations, and precise fly placement. Although it flexes more than the other two models, it retains enough recovery speed for effective saltwater casting and remains capable of handling wind when the angler allows the rod to load fully.
Choosing the Right Rod
Each rod is purpose-built for fly fishing in Hawaii, yet each offers a clearly different experience on the water.
Choose the “Oio” Special if you want the fastest recovery, the tightest loops, and the greatest power for heavy wind, long casts, and demanding flies. Choose the Joe Marks model if you want a fast-action rod with more flex, more feedback, and the widest range of casting applications. Choose the “Kurupt Hawaiian” if you prefer the deepest load, the smoothest tempo, and the greatest feel for controlled presentations and precise timing.
In simple terms, the “Oio” Special is the fastest and most powerful, the Joe Marks model is the most versatile, and the “Kurupt Hawaiian” offers the most flex and feel.
If you are new to fly fishing and have not yet developed a preferred action, choose the rod that reflects the angler, style, or color that speaks to you. Whichever model you select, you will be fishing a rod built to the same exacting standard.
