Halloween

By Makani Christensen

Every year, Sean, the former owner of the only fly shop in Hawaii, dressed in a Halloween costume. It’s a pretty solid tradition that Sean started within the fly-fishing community.

Last year, I dressed up as a crystal ball. I was fly fishing in Maui and managed to hook a bonefish. I sent a text to Johan the other guide from Maui. However, I was the only person to show up in costume.

One year, I was scheduled to meet Byron and his girlfriend at the time to go fishing. It was Halloween, so I stopped at Walmart to buy costumes. I asked him if he wanted to be a hot dog or a crayon.

We fished on the Triangle, and he was dressed like a hot dog when a decent-sized bonefish popped up between three guides and Byron.

Ed Tamai, Chris Wright, and I, Makani Christensen, guided the hot dog to land a bonefish. Byron caught his first Hawaiian bonefish while maintaining a solid tradition.

It’s a tradition that started with Sean and has since spread throughout the fly-fishing community. What are you wearing this Halloween?
